2007, #2, Incompetence

So, today was pretty normal as far as days go. Did this, did that. Tried to figure out which teachers had which keys, as keys are a controlled item and people rarely actually check them out. The secretary has done a great job of keeping track of them, but she's leaving, so I'm trying to figure it all out. That was fun.

Changed some more schedules, kind of an interesting job really.

But the big news was my first shitty parent. Though this was on the phone. I called because I had to inform the parent that to stay in "regular" high school, he'd have to sign a contract that, if met, would mean he could stay at the regular high school. Otherwise, he might be credit deficient and would have to go an unconventional route to graduate, at least temporarily.

I called, said, "Hi, this is TR, is (mom) there?"

She said, "This is (mom)."

I said, "Hi, I need to come in when it's convenient so we can discuss how to keep (Little Jonny) at the high school."

She said, "I'm not ok with that." Then laid in to me, starting with how I was an incompetent F*** working at an incompetent school that doesn't give a shit about anything or anyone. Seriously, a five minute diatribe on how horrible a teacher/person I was/am.

That's all fine and good, but I have no clue who she is, who her kid is, and know next to nothing about either of them (aside from mom being a bit crazy). I've never had the kid in class, have never had a need to, as I always taught Seniors. She was pissed because she didn't get a "vote" in what happened with her kid.

I had no clue what she was talking about, until she mentioned the team. She was referring to the Student Study Team, which meets and reviews kid's files to figure out what is best for a student. They may elect special help, they may elect for testing in special ed, and in some cases (such as this one), they "elected" to send the kid to the continuation school. Not because he was a jerk, but because if he didn't go to the continuation school, there would have been no way he could graduate on time (one can make up credits more quickly working independently).

But I got the brunt of the crap from this mom, and have become, in my second week, the most incompetent person ever. She said she made $37 dollars an hour and had to pay rent, so she didn't have the time to come to the school to sign off on a contract.

Whatever. $37/hour is what? $70,000 a year? Sounds like not too bad a job to me. Makes more than I did (or ever would have) as a teacher. Anyway, it took about 5 minutes to get over it, but I still had to share the story with someone.

I guess I don't know what I'm doing. Good thing I'm being paid pretty well, as I'm guessing I'll be fired soon. Life will go on.

Two words: FAX MACHINE
In an age where we can execute loans, leases, etc. by facsimile, why did it not occur to her to suggest this. It would have been the *first* thing to come into my mind as a freelancer. Hell, you guys could have sent the damn thing back and forth through the USPS after hammering out terms on the phone, for what it's worth. Yeah, I fully support her desire to deal with the situation remotely, but she's an asshole for basically calling you an asshole, when in fact, you've engaged in no assholery whatsoever.

How rare!

We all know how rare it is that TR isn't an asshole, too, so congrats on withholding your natural inclinations!

Seriously, the lady sounds batty. You might be incompetent when playing an F chord on a 12 string guitar but not when it comes to your job...
